Adam 'Gaff' Leyland


Adam (Gaff) Leyland, Director of Coaching. Gaff, was the Director for Clackamas United and is currently the Varsity Coach for the LaSalle Girls. In addition he has coached many very successful girls teams at Southside, THUSC, and Crossfire. He is an experienced leader, progressive, and supports our mission and vision of continuing to build a strong community within the Eastside Timbers Football Club.


Gaff will have the overall responsibilities to insure the growth and development of Eastside Timbers as we reach out to the East County to give more children the opportunity to play the game and be an integral part of the Eastside Timbers Football Club Family.

Joe Berninghausen - Assistant Coach


Joe has been coaching with Eastside since 2008, working with both girls and boys. Joe attended Western Oregon Univeristy and earned a Bachelors of Science in Physical Education. Joe worked as a Goalkeeper Trainer for the WOU Womens Soccer team in the 2007 season. Joe coached the JV boys at Barlow High School for four successful seasons where he coached many Eastside players through the high school ranks. Joe currently works as an Assistive Technology Assistant in Special Education for the Gresham-Barlow School District and is a team coach as well as a part of Eastside Timbers Goalkeeper Training staff..


Joe currently holds a USSF 'D' license and a NSCAA Level 2 goalkeeping certification.

Sharla Topaum - Head Coach


Sharla has been a member of the Eastside coaching community since 2005. Her passion for the game began well before then; as a young player growing up in Canada, Sharla played her way through the competitive youth levels in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and Alberta. In college, she played as a starter at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). After moving to the United States in 1998, Sharla hung up her boots to focus on her graduate studies, earning a Master of Science degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Portland State University. She continued to satisfy her love for the game by playing locally and coaching youth teams. Sharla has been involved with Eastside at the recreational and developmental levels, and for the last several years, on the competitive side. Sharla is proud to have helped the Eastside Timbers '00 girls earn back to back State Cup Championships in 2012 and 2013. She currently holds the US Soccer National "C" license.

Ryan Schwoeble

Ryan Schwoeble - Head Coach


Ryan comes from Pittsburgh, PA where as a player was part of the Region I ODP team and played two years at Point Park University. Ryan also had a residency with the U-17 National Team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton FL and the Watford F.C. in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. Ryan has spent the past two seasons coaching for the Adidas 1898 Academy at the historic Beadling Soccer Club (Pittsburgh, PA). He also has coached as an assistant at Upper St. Clair High School (Pittsburgh, PA) for 10 seasons accomplishing two state championships and the program's fourth NSCAA High School National Championship fall season. Ryan spent 6 seasons as a Professional USSF National Referee before retiring at the end of the 2013 season.


Ryan holds a USSF D License, NSCAA Advanced Regional, and NSCAA Goalkeeper Level II Diploma.

Carly Copplestone

Carly Copplestone - Head Coach


Carly comes to EastSide Timbers from England where she was a Physical Education teacher for 10 years. She has always loved the game of soccer and played for Barking Ladies FC, a senior women's side that has competed at Step 2 of English Women's Soccer for 10 years. Carly's leadership skills were recognized in 2013 when the club offered her a player/coach role for the 2013-14 season. This was a position she relished and lead the team to the County Cup Finals for the first time in a decade. After this, Carly was asked to join CK Basildon FC, which plays in the Premier League. After changing playing position she played for one year but then had to retire due to injury.


Carly's ultimate dream was always to be able to coach in the US. After her soccer career in England ended, she focused on coaching and made the move to Portland. Prior to coming to Portland, Carly coached at the prestigious Elite Soccer camps in Boston for three years then for the No Tippy Tappy organization in Guelph and Rockwood, Canada. Carly is also one of the Assistant Coaches and the Community Youth Development Coach for the Portland Thorns.

Andrew Toth - Head Coach


Andy started playing soccer at age 6. He was a four year Men's Varsity player for Centennial High School and made All Conference first team his Junior and Senior years. Andy played one year at Linfield College and one year at Concordia . He has coached for EastSide for the past 11 years; 7 as a volunteer Recreation Coach and 4 years on the Developmental and Competitive side of the club. Andy is the JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant coach at Sam Barlow High School for the women's program. He has his "F" License and is currently working towards his "E".

Todd Saks

Todd Saks - Assistant Coach


Todd has been playing or coaching soccer for the past 35 years. He played his high school years under the Late Clive Charles at Reynolds High School. After high school, Todd played and went to Oregon State University earning a BS degree in History and minoring in Economics.


Todd has spent the last 18 years in the Centennial School District as a 6th Grade Teacher. He was a Varsity Assistant in the Girls Soccer Program for 12 years and in 2000 won the 4A Girls Soccer State Championship. Todd would spend the next 6 years as the Varsity Boys Head Coach at Centennial High School. Todd has been a member of the Eastside Timber's coaching staff for the past 6 years. Todd and his wife Cathy will celebrate 19 years of marriage in July and have two beautiful daughters ages 15 and 9.

Mike Drennan - Head Coach


Mike is a multigenerational Native Oregonian growing up and currently settled in the Clackamas area. Mike played locally for Eastside predecessor clubs 3 Rivers United and West Villa as well as earning 11 Varsity Letters and All Three Rivers League Honors as an Oregon Scholar Athlete in 3 Sports at Clackamas HS (Soccer, Track and CC). Mike has coached everything from Rec/PDP to Competitive Soccer since 2007; joining the Eastside Family in 2016.


Mike currently hold his National C and Y license as well as a Positive Coaching Alliance Certificate.

Staci Tatum - Assistant Coach


Staci is one of EastSide's "home grown" coaches. She began playing recreation soccer with Gresham Youth, then competitive with EastSide United, now EastSide Timbers. After 4 years on the Women's Varsity squad at Gresham High School, Staci moved on to play with Warner Pacific College, where she still attends and plays. She began coaching for EastSide in 2015 as an Assistant Coach on the 2001G Celta Vigo team. Staci holds her "F" License.

Staci Tatum - Head Coach

Chris Keegan - Assitant Coach


Chris has over 12 years of youth coaching experience coaching soccer, baseball and basketball. Soccer is his first love and he plans on continuing to coach for as long as he can. Chris does not have a ton of playing experience but has been around the game with his boys for about 12 years. Through his kids he has developed a deep love for the game and enjoys teaching it! Chris currently has an "F" License.
